Bucklesham 3 - 1 Kesgrave Utd

The first league match of the season for Bucklesham F.C. sponsored by Edge Consult kicked off against a confident Kesgrave United side who had already defeated Bucks 6-1 in a pre-season friendly. Sure enough, United took the lead in the 2nd minute with a fiercely struck shot that flew in the net before goalkeeper Jack Small could even move.

The Bucks of last season may well have wilted, but they quickly played their way back into the game and began to seize the initiative, playing good football and allowing their opponents no time on the ball. After 15 minutes Small rolled the ball out to right back David Scrutton who smartly moved the ball out to the wing where Matt Handebeaux  beat his man and put an early low cross in for Sam Riches to sweep the ball home.  Rather than sit on their laurels Bucks took the game to United.  Centre Back Jack Green tapped in after a corner which United failed to clear and the half time lead was increased when Handebeaux went on a long mazy run and had the ball stolen from him by Lawrence Mann on the edge of the United box to fire the ball into the corner of the goal.

Bucks continued to dominate the game in the second half and created several chances which they just failed to put away. United’s substitute keeper made a series of excellent saves to keep his team in contention, but with Bucks’ defence in no mood to give the United strikers any chances the points were secured.

It was an impressive team  performance overall, with man of the match being handed to Mike Holbrook who was so impressive in his new midfield role.
